Sunterra Timeshares – A History
1992: The company that would eventually become the Sunterra Corporation acquired its first resort, Cypress Pointe in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
1996: The company formed its corporate entity - KGK Resorts, Inc. - and added an additional eight resorts to its portfolio. In the fall of that same year, the company changed its name to Signature Resorts.
1997: In just over a year, Signature Resorts had become the world's largest vacation ownership company, with 81 resorts in eight countries in Europe and North America.
1998: Signature Resorts changed its name to Sunterra. Sunterra introduced Club Sunterra, a points-based system designed to give members greater vacationing flexibility. Over the next few years, however, Sunterra's stock plummeted because of irresponsible expansion and the practice of approving loans for unqualified buyers.
2000: Sunterra filed for bankruptcy.
2002: Sunterra Resorts relocated its headquarters from Orlando to Las Vegas, reduced the number of properties it owned, and reorganized into the Sunterra Europe and Sunterra USA divisions.
2003: Sunterra Resorts returned to profitability and began to acquire new properties again.
2007: Sunterra became part of the Diamond Resorts family. Diamond reformulated the Club Sunterra program into Diamond Resorts THE Club, retaining the perks of amazing travel opportunities and flexibility, while adding a stability to the program that former Sunterra Diamond owners appreciate.
